Occupy wall street & E North Ave
Yesterday my homie on twitter DM’d me from the protests down on wallstreet “Were sitting outside wallstreet blasting backyard heroes in the rain. Thought that would put a smile on your face!”
Of course it did put a smile on my face but also made me reflect on a few things I wanted to share!!!
We wrote E North Ave in 2008 when the recession was at its worst. Honestly I was barley getting by, working my ass off at a job that could barely pay me, renting from a home owner that was going threw foreclosure, working on music and it meant a lot to me that the people my my life like neighbor producer matt jenkins, Homeless DJ blaze and all my good friends would still get together and laugh threw all these tough times.
That’s where the inspiration for this song came. All though times are tough we still “like it like this” we are still alive living on E North Ave in Lake Bluff, il and enjoying are only shot at life.
I think that the protesters at occupy walls street is our generation expressing the frustrations with a system that allows for certain corruption to fuck the little guys like us. Our world needs more transparency, less relentlessness greed, leaders that truly care about the people that elect them and I think our world needs more compassion for each other. Several songs on my new album deal with this subject matter “Good People” feat Jack Johnson, “They Don’t Care About Us” and a few more.
I challenge everyone out there looking for a job, struggling to pay the bills and what not to start believing in yourself and understand that everything is going to be okay. Be creative start your own business using that talents you have and fight your way out of your current situations and keep your head up. Most importantly always speak your mind and fight for what you believe in. I’ll keep creating music that hopefully will give you the energy and inspiration to get there. Remember we are all in this together!!!!
Your Neighbor,
Kidd Russell

6 or 7 years ago, I can’t remember now but I was novice hip hop artist living in Chicago rooming with now wrestling superstar Colt Cabana. Colt was already living the dream traveling every weekend wrestling in front of hundreds of people making a living at what he loves to do. I have known Colt since I was like 10 years old and the only thing he’s ever dreamed of doing was professional wrestling and he was doing it. It was amazing to me. The only thing I had ever wanted to do was rap. I was trying but believing I could do it was another thing. This was like 2002 before white rappers were in. Colt believed in me so much he booked my first show ever at Peabodies in Cleveland, Ohio at a wrestling and rap show. Needless to say I knew wrestling crowds well, heckling was part of the fun at these indie shows so I was scared shitless. I was as green as it gets, I had no idea how to hold a mic and even less how to rock a crowd. Still my buddy pushed me all the way onto the ring. Right before I went on stage I could feel my heart sinking threw my chest. We walked on the stage and for the first 30 seconds or so things were going great. I was spitting with passion and my hype man was on point. Then we got to the hook which has singing vocals. Instead of bringing my singer at the time me and my hype man butchered the hook. From that point on the boo’s didn’t stop. It got so bad my hype man jumped out the ring and started fighting. We basically had to sneak out the back after the show. Colt talked to me after the show and gave me words of encouragement. Truth be told even tho things went bad I learned so many things from that show. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me hungry and taught me to prepare for what audience I was performing for. From that moment on I was hooked. I’ve gone onto great things since then and have rocked 200+ shows around the country. I’ve earned my stripes, perfected my craft and I am approaching some of the biggest opportunities of my career. And I owe a lot of where I am to my great friend Colt and all 8 of the backyard heroes. He pushed me like he was pushed to follow my heart. Now I get to show the younger cats how to do it and inspire the kids coming after me its a great circle of life. Today my buddy Colt has an amazing article in the Chicago Reader and his career is at an all time high and he’s done it all by working harder then everyone else and never giving up. I’m so proud of him I can’t even tell you. He continues to be one the biggest inspirations of my life and I hope that his story and mine inspire all the younger kids to support your friends no matter how crazy their dreams may be. I just wanted to say one more time thanks COLT you deserve all the success coming your way my friend.

“Is he hip hop? Is he alternative? Is he Rock-rap? Well, for the sake of leaving the labels alone, we’ll just call Chi-Town’s Kidd Russell and artist and leave it at that. “

Over the last 2 years after meeting my now full time producer Matt Jenkins we had the concept that if you just make great music people will come no matter what genre you make. Labels want you to be rap or rock or alternative or pop or one specific genre because its easy to market an artist like that. Matt and I had a concept if we can root our music in hip hop but genre jump maybe we can hit different markets and in turn grab fans from several different demographics similar to kid rock or what Lil Wayne is attempting to do. Well in urbs write up about my career and music they called me just “an artist0”. This is actually what we are striving for. I’d love to be able to rock a song with Jack Johnson and then turn around and rock a track with Common and then maybe with Linkin Park because I enjoy all these different types of music as well. Its not the route I suggest every one do but its the route me and Matt have chosen…well for now lol. Anyways enjoy the article shout out to Travis Glave for putting it together for me I really appreciate it. Love you all thanks for continued support of my career
keep dreaming

This is an oldie but a goodie. One of my favorites from my first album UNTIED. the song is called “dont cry for me.” I wrote it becuase I was finally living my dream writing and performing music so if I died today dont cry cuz Im fullfilled. Interesting story about my album UNTIED was named after my girlfriend who I was dating at the time TY. When she broke up with me my friends would laugh and say your “unty’d” Lol and it also worked for the theme of the album which was quit your suit and tie job and live your dream lol. YOu can find untied on Itunes.
