6 or 7 years ago, I can’t remember now but I was novice hip hop artist living in Chicago rooming with now wrestling superstar Colt Cabana. Colt was already living the dream traveling every weekend wrestling in front of hundreds of people making a living at what he loves to do. I have known Colt since I was like 10 years old and the only thing he’s ever dreamed of doing was professional wrestling and he was doing it. It was amazing to me. The only thing I had ever wanted to do was rap. I was trying but believing I could do it was another thing. This was like 2002 before white rappers were in. Colt believed in me so much he booked my first show ever at Peabodies in Cleveland, Ohio at a wrestling and rap show. Needless to say I knew wrestling crowds well, heckling was part of the fun at these indie shows so I was scared shitless. I was as green as it gets, I had no idea how to hold a mic and even less how to rock a crowd. Still my buddy pushed me all the way onto the ring. Right before I went on stage I could feel my heart sinking threw my chest. We walked on the stage and for the first 30 seconds or so things were going great. I was spitting with passion and my hype man was on point. Then we got to the hook which has singing vocals. Instead of bringing my singer at the time me and my hype man butchered the hook. From that point on the boo’s didn’t stop. It got so bad my hype man jumped out the ring and started fighting. We basically had to sneak out the back after the show. Colt talked to me after the show and gave me words of encouragement. Truth be told even tho things went bad I learned so many things from that show. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me hungry and taught me to prepare for what audience I was performing for. From that moment on I was hooked. I’ve gone onto great things since then and have rocked 200+ shows around the country. I’ve earned my stripes, perfected my craft and I am approaching some of the biggest opportunities of my career. And I owe a lot of where I am to my great friend Colt and all 8 of the backyard heroes. He pushed me like he was pushed to follow my heart. Now I get to show the younger cats how to do it and inspire the kids coming after me its a great circle of life. Today my buddy Colt has an amazing article in the Chicago Reader and his career is at an all time high and he’s done it all by working harder then everyone else and never giving up. I’m so proud of him I can’t even tell you. He continues to be one the biggest inspirations of my life and I hope that his story and mine inspire all the younger kids to support your friends no matter how crazy their dreams may be. I just wanted to say one more time thanks COLT you deserve all the success coming your way my friend.
